RTBMO Basecamp: September 2024 Progress Report

September 2024 was an action-packed month at the Return To Base Missouri (RTBMO) Basecamp, filled with major upgrades, teamwork, and preparation for the next phase of our mission to serve Veterans and their families.

We kicked off the month of September with Jack Lawler, his son, John, and grandson, Jack, completing the flagpole installation, adding a proud centerpiece to the Basecamp. Andy Stodgel and Dennis Lenger also made great strides by adding railings to the stand deck and ramp, improving wheelchair accessibility for all. The weekend wrapped up with two additional deer stands, a fully set-up tent, and a well-organized camp—thanks to the tireless “Mizzou Cannon Crew.”

More progress followed mid-month, as the roofing was secured, the camp container received a fresh coat of paint, the lawn was mowed, and new signage by Andy gave the tent and container a sharp new look. The Weber grill and other equipment were prepped for fall hunts, ensuring the camp was fully operational.

On September 22, Tom Reiter of R&G Hardscapes, along with his daughter, improved access by regrading the trail to the southern ridge, fixing deep ruts, and creating better water diversion. That same day, we were honored to welcome the Willson Family for a camp tour and visit, serving as another great reminder of the strong community supporting RTBMO.

The final weekend of September served as a major weekend of setup and organization. The team completed a long list of projects including assembling the skinning rack, setting up the gazebo walls, wood stove, Blackstone, RV sink and toilet, tankless water heater, and more. They even brush-hogged shooting lanes, split firewood, and created a new fire-pit. The camp reached the stage of “fully ready” for the hunting season ahead.

With every project, RTBMO continues building not just a camp, but a community—a place where Veterans and their families can find purpose, healing, and camaraderie.
